Argentina has asked for the arrest of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and seven other Iranians on charges they masterminded the blast, which killed 85 people. OLMERT GIVEN A LIST OF 450 PALESTINIAN PRISONERS TO BE FREED :
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been handed a list of 450 Palestinian prisoners to be freed for the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Schalit, compiled by a special advisory committee of four cabinet ministers led by Vice Premier Haim Ramon. However, Hamas is demanding that between 1,000 and 1,500 prisoners be freed in order for Schalit to be released. The list of 450 includes the names of half of the prisoners Hamas wants freed.

In honor of the new Jewish year of 5769, which begins next Monday night, the Central Bureau of Statistics has released the latest population statistics . The bottom line: Jewish growth is up, Moslem growth is down. Israel’s population at the end of 2007 stood at over 7.24 million, including 5.48 million Jews (75.6%) and 1.45 million Arabs (20%). The Jewish population grew by 1.6%. By contrast, the United States population grows annually by 0.9%. The Muslim population grew by 2.8% in 2007 - compared with 3% just two years earlier, and 3.8% in 2000. The Jewish population in Judea and Samaria [not including Jerusalem neighborhoods in areas liberated in 1967] stood at 282,000 at the end of 2007, according to the Interior Ministry. This is an increase of 5.2% over the year before - three times higher than the population jump in all of Israel. The population figures do not include citizens living in communities deemed illegal by the government. At the beginning of 2007, the total world Jewish population was 13,155,000,

Members of an eastern Jerusalem-based Arab terror cell have been arrested and indicted by Israeli authorities, it was announced on Wednesday September 24. The cell is believed to be responsible for the murder of two IDF border guards in separate attacks, as well as plotting various other murderous attacks. Senior Shin Bet (Shabak) officials said that the seven Arabs in the cell, including six from eastern Jerusalem, were indicted early last week on charges of murder, attempted murder, weapons trafficking and illegal possession of firearms. PENTAGON TEAM MEETS WITH IAF OVER F-35 PURCHASE :
The Pentagon this week sent a delegation of officers from its F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program to Israel to discuss with the Israeli Air Force final details concerning Israel’s plans to place an order for 25 of the F-35 stealth fighter-jet and 50 other jets, next year. According to officials, Israel is trying to formally submit a purchase order and ink a deal with the Pentagon by the beginning of next year. Israel will start receiving F-35s in 2014 if the deal goes through.

The United States told Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in May it would not back an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, according to European diplomatic sources quoted by the British Guardian newspaper. Bush reportedly not only rejected the idea but also added that his view would not change until he leaves office in January. Saudi Arabia needs crude oil prices to remain above $49 a barrel to avoid a fiscal deficit, said Mohsin Khan, director of Middle East and central Asia at the International Monetary Fund. Other Gulf states with smaller populations and lower government spending like the UAE are able to run a fiscal surplus as long as oil prices are above $23 a barrel. Kuwait’s break-even price is $33 a barrel. “Iran’s break-even price is $90 a barrel,” Khan said. “If prices dip below $90 a barrel… then they would have to tighten their public expenditure policy, and probably cut subsidies.”

American elementary and high school textbooks contain many “gross misrepresentations” of Judaism, Christianity and Israel. Among the “outrageous misrepresentations” was the statement in the textbook The World that “Christianity was started by a young Palestinian named Jesus.” Among the claims in the textbooks are that Arab countries never initiated wars against Israel, Arab nations desire peace while Israel does not, and that it was Israel that placed Palestinians in refugee camps in Arab lands, not Arab governments.
ISRAEL HOME TO LARGEST JEWISH POPULATION :
There are currently 5.55 million Jews living in Israel and 5.3 million in the U.S., the Jewish Agency said Friday September 26.. The two countries account for the vast majority of the world’s 13.3 million Jews. The third-largest community resides in France, which has a Jewish population of 490,000.
