Yossi Baidatz, head of Military Intelligence’s Research Division, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tuesday June 17. Despite UN Resolution 1701 (which ruled that no military forces could be deployed south of the river and that Hizbullah must disarm), Hizbullah has maintained and even strengthened its presence in the very areas from which the IDF sought to remove them in summer 2006. According to Baidatz, the Iranian-sponsored terror group has smuggled tens of thousands of rockets and has brought thousands of fighters to the area.

Israel is considering a proposal by Egypt to deploy a multinational Arab force in Gaza as a final stage of the cease-fire agreement with Hamas that went into effect this morning, according to a senior IDF official involved in the truce negotiations.
IDF KILLS ROCKET-LAUNCHER MOMENTS BEFORE TRUCE:
Moments before the cease-fire in Gaza went into effect this morning, a Hamas operative was killed and two others were wounded during an IAF strike, said Palestinian reports. The IDF said that it had targeted a Qassam rocket squad preparing to fire near the Bureij refugee camp in Central Gaza. Palestinians in Gaza fired 30 Kassam rockets at Israeli communities on Wednesday, wounding one woman.Meanwhile, at least 12 terror suspects in the West Bank were arrested overnight and an IDF officer was wounded when he was shot during an arrest in Nablus.

By an 8-4 vote, the Knesset House Committee passed on Wednesday morning June 18, an early version of a law requiring a popular referendum before the Golan could be given away. The proposal is now ready to be voted on in the full Knesset plenum for its first reading. If it passes, it must be transferred back to the Committee for last-minute changes and a vote, and if it passes that hurdle, it will be voted on for a final time in the Kneset. The bill states that no referendum is necessary if at least 80 MKs - two-thirds of the Knesset - support the retreat. If a majority of less than 2/3 supports a withdrawal, the retreat must be approved in a popular referendum before becoming law.

At least 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighter jets were involved in the exercises carried out over the eastern Mediterranean and Greece, which focused on long-range air skills. The exercises were so extensive, Washington believes they were meant to be picked up by other Western intelligence agencies as a demonstration that Israel was prepared to act militarily if diplomatic efforts to stop Iran from developing a uranium nuclear weapon fail. “They wanted us to know, they wanted the Europeans to know, and they wanted the Iranians to know,” one Pentagon official said.

The High Court of Justice has ordered the government to keep the Gaza Crossings closed for the time being and told Major-General (res.) Amos Gilad, head the of the Defense Ministry’s Security-Diplomatic Bureau, to meet with the Shalit family. The Shalit family petitioned the Court over the weekend to block implementation of the ceasefire agreement and keep the Gaza crossings closed until their son is freed by Hamas and other terrorists, who kidnapped him near the Kerem Shalom Crossing two years ago.
