The letter, dotted with sources from the White House website and elsewhere to bolster its points, begins by welcoming the US President to Israel. It then explains that “vital interests” of both Israel and the US are liable to be endangered “due to your visit, particularly in view of Prime Minister Olmert’s legal troubles.” By far, the worst terror threat, they write, is the potential third terror machine, in Judea and Samaria, just opposite the homes of millions of Israelis.”

In a rousing speech before a packed Knesset on Thursday May 8, visiting US President George W. Bush praised Israel as a beacon of freedom and democracy while expressing hope that one day radical Muslim groups such as al-Qaida, Hizbullah and Hamas will “recognize the emptiness of the terrorists’ vision and the injustice of their cause. No nation should ever be forced to negotiate with killers pledged to its destruction,” President Bush told the Knesset. US President George Bush spoke for almost 25 minutes, delivering a speech filled with references to God, to Israel as the Holy Land and to the heritage of the Biblical patriarchs. “We gather to mark a momentous occasion. Sixty years ago in Tel Aviv, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed Israel’s independence, founded on the “natural right of the Jewish people to be masters of their own fate.” What followed was more than the establishment of a new country. It was the redemption of an ancient promise given to Abraham and Moses and David — a homeland for the chosen people: Eretz Yisrael. Speaking of Islamic terrorists Mr Bush said, “No one who prays to the God of Abraham could strap a suicide vest to an innocent child, or blow up guiltless guests at a Passover Seder, or fly planes into office buildings filled with unsuspecting workers.”

60 YEARS ON ISRAEL STILL LIVES: - Editorial Dallas Morning News
The British Mandate in Palestine came to an end on May 14, 1948 - in Tel Aviv, Zionist leader David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel in the territory the United Nations designated as the Jewish homeland. After nearly two millennia, the Jewish people had come home. Arab armies attacked within hours, with one leader promising to “sweep the Jews into the sea.” Against unbelievable odds, Israel prevailed. After winning two more wars of survival - in 1967 and 1973 - the Jewish state would build a durable, prosperous democracy. Israel is not just a fortress against anti-Jewish killers. It is a raft of modernity and material progress in a regional sea of intolerance and militaristic sectarianism. Israel, one of the United States’ strongest allies, has no oil reserves, but it has turned itself into a model of diverse economic development unmatched The shekel is now one of the strongest currencies in the world, inflation is 2.5%, last year’s 5% growth was the developed world’s highest for the fifth consecutive year, while unemployment slid to a 15-year low of 6.5%. We read from the Washington Post, “This week of May 10, marks the 60th anniversary of the return and restoration of the remaining two tribes of Israel - Judah and Benjamin, later known as the Jews - to their ancient homeland. Besides restoring Jewish sovereignty, the establishment of the State of Israel embodied many subsidiary miracles, from the creation of the first Jewish army since Roman times to the only recorded instance of the resurrection of a dead language - Hebrew, now the daily tongue of a vibrant nation of 7 million.

ISRAEL DESERVES ADMIRATION: - Salim Mansur (Edmonton Sun-Canada)
The birth of Israel has offered Jews a secure home where they may prosper without any fear or apology. If Israel had been born ten years earlier, then a great many Jews who perished in Hitler’s death camps likely would have survived. Jews are an insignificant fraction of the present world population of over six and a half billion - around 14 million, or 0.2% of the total. Yet Jewish contributions in the making of the modern world tower above that of any other people in relative terms and the immense odds of survival as a people given the level of hostility directed at them. Turning a desert into one of the rich economies of the world few imagined six decades ago is a proof of how much more could be achieved if those fighting Jews joined with them instead.

VOID OF LEADERSHIP, PALESTINIAN MOVEMENT LOSES MOMENTUM: - Joshua Mitnick
Sixty years after Israel’s birth, the Palestinian national movement finds itself in a deteriorating state of paralysis. Eyad Sarraj, the director of the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, notes, “We have a serious structural problem in the national movement. The control all the time has been by the gun, and fanatical militants, who are largely uneducated and ignorant, causing most of the disasters we are in today.”.

WHAT AILS THE PALESTINIANS? WHY DO THEY FAIL CONTINUALLY?
Palestinian suffering is, of course, real and heart-wrenching, but what the Arab narrative deliberately distorts is the cause of its own tragedy: the folly of its own fanatical leadership - from Haj Amin al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem (Nazi collaborator, who spent World War II in Berlin), to Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser to Yasser Arafat to Hamas of today - that repeatedly chose war rather than compromise and conciliation. Palestinian dispossession is a direct result of the Arab rejection, then and now, of a Jewish state of any size on any part of the vast lands the Arabs claim as their exclusive patrimony.

CHIEF PA NEGOTIATOR: JERUSALEM ON THE TABLE! : by Hillel Fendel
Contrary to denials by top Israeli officials, the future of Jerusalem is being discussed in top-level negotiations between Israel and Palestinian Authority officials. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has often said that Jerusalem is not being discussed at present, and that it will be left for a later stage of talks. The Shas party has said even more often that it would quit the government coalition if it learned that Jerusalem was on the table. The departure of Shas would topple the government, for all intents and purposes. The Arab view is that the establishment of a Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem is a “certainty!

GOVERNMENT REMOVES MAIN CHECKPOINT: by Ezra HaLevi
At the behest of Quartet envoy Tony Blair the government has removed a major checkpoint and destroyed a young Jewish community. The IDF removed a checkpoint at the “Sheep Junction” south of Hebron early on Sunday morning May 18 , opening the junction to Palestinian Authority Arabs. ARABS TORCH JEWISH WHEAT FIELDS IN SAMARIA: by Ezra HaLevi
Arabs burned Jewish-owned wheat fields in the Samaria town of Yitzhar Friday May 16. The regular vandalism has led residents to ponder soliciting assistance from humanitarian groups. The Arab residents of a neighboring village succeeded in burning the entire year’s crop two and a half years ago and the fields were set ablaze five times during the course of a single summer last year. In another incident, most of the fence installed around one farmer’s fields was stolen. In 2005, Yitzhar resident Akiva Cohen spotted the raging fire and fired shots in the air to frighten the arsonists away. About 100 dunams of wheat were burned in the blaze. IDF troops conducted a search for the arsonists in the adjacent village of Atzira al-Kabliya to no avail.

YET ANOTHER OLMERT SCANDAL: SUSPECTED OF RECEIVING $300 K: by Hillel Fendel
Journalist Yoav Yitzchak, who has doggedly pursued the criminal suspicions against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for years, has now unleashed another one. Yitzchak claims Olmert received an unauthorized $300,000 when he was Trade Minister. The money was allegedly given in-between campaign elections, thus that “even if Olmert states that the money was to cover election campaign deficits, this will not help purify him from the suspicion of accepting a bribe,” Yitzchak writes.
