Firebrand cleric Sheikh Raed Salah failed to appear for police questioning on Thursday in the criminal case arising out his inciteful speech in February 2007 against the proposed Mugrabi Gate project leading to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. His associates insisted Salah has had to be assigned round-the-clock bodyguards due to threats on his life from extreme right-wing Jewish elements in the wake of the Mercaz Harav yeshiva shooting massacre. Salah has become a champion of defending Islam’s exclusive claim to the Temple Mount mosques, and reports this week indicated that some former students of the yeshiva were considering a revenge attack on a Muslim cleric affiliated with the al-Aqsa mosque. Leaflets also appeared in Jerusalem in recent days calling for “measure for measure” revenge on Israel’s enemies.
