In his latest report to the Security Council on efforts to implement the ceasefire that ended the Second Lebanon War, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday February 4, cited Israeli estimates that Hizbullah has defied an arms embargo and restocked its arsenal with 10,000 long-range rockets and 20,000 short-range rockets in southern Lebanon.
IAF KILLS TWO PALESTINIANS IN GAZA:
Tuesday February 4 was relatively quiet on the Gaza front compared to the escalation in fighting over the weekend that left nearly 120 Palestinians and 3 Israelis dead. According to Palestinian sources, two Palestinian militiamen were killed and four were wounded in two different IAF air strikes on Tuesday when Israeli aircraft struck rocket launchers in Gaza.
IRAN’S PROXY IN GAZA: - Noah Pollak (Commentary)
Iran has invested heavily in Palestinian terrorism in recent years, both financially and logistically. Scores of millions of dollars have been funneled directly and indirectly to Hamas and other Palestinian groups and numerous Palestinian terrorists have been brought to Iran for advanced training, to the point where today Gaza exists for the Iranians as another forward operating base, a projection of power similar to but not as capable as Hizbullah. The defeat of their proxy in Gaza would be a serious loss to Iran.
PILOTLESS PLANES EMERGE AS TOP ISRAELI WEAPON IN WAR WITH HAMAS: - Ibrahim Barzak and Aron Heller (AP/MSNBC)
Palestinians say pilotless planes have been a major weapon in Israel’s latest offensive in Gaza. Drones provide a cost effective alternative for armies to target enemies, without risking their own pilots’ lives while reducing civilian casualties in heavily populated areas.
WHAT DID THE IDF OPERATION IN GAZA ACHIEVE? - Ron Ben-Yishai
What did Israel’s combined ground and aerial operation in Gaza achieve? Hamas lost about 70 men in three days, and that’s a lot - even for a group that sanctifies death. Furthermore, the operation eroded Hamas’ status in the eyes of local residents. It doesn’t matter how often Hamas spokesmen repeat “the people is behind us,” phone conversations with Gaza residents create a wholly different impression.
ARAB ‘THIRD INTIFADA’ UNDERWAY? by Nissan Ratzlav-Katz
A near-lynch by an Arab mob in Jerusalem ended without casualties on Monday March 3, as rioters confronted civilians and soldiers in several locales. Arab students at Israeli universities held pro-Palestinian Authority demonstrations as well. Hundreds of policemen are on high-alert duty in the capital on Tuesday. Israeli security sources say that the riots are not a spontaneous outpouring of rage over the events in Gaza, as they are often portrayed. Rather, the sources say, the unrest is organized and incited by those elements interested in “heating up” the Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria regions. Those behind the incitement are attempting to spark what some sources say may be a “third Intifada.”
KASSAM DESTROYS SDEROT HOME: IAF RETALIATES: by Hana Julian
Sderot residents awakened in the early morning light on Tuesday March 4 to the wail of the first Color Red rocket alert siren of the day. Less than a half minute later, a Kassam rocket slammed into a house. The house was destroyed, but terrorists failed to hurt anyone in the attack, as no one was home. Within the hour, the IAF attacked two rocket-launching terrorist cells in separate strikes. Soldiers confirmed hits on both cells. The IDF said the attacks targeted terrorists who were launching rockets at Israel from areas north of Jabalya and east of Gaza City. Two terrorists were eliminated in the IAF strikes. One was identified as Ayman Cahouji, a member of the Hamas terrorist organization that rules Gaza. The second dead terrorist was not identified.
RICE RETURNS TO REGION, IDF WITHDRAWS: By Hanna Julian
The IDF scaled back its military activities in Gaza Monday morning March 3, despite ongoing rocket, mortar and missile attacks on Israel in a hiatus which sources in Jerusalem said was due to US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s expected arrival in Jerusalem Tuesday. Senior government sources said that the IDF’s operations up to this point constituted “a very limited operation [that was] intended to show Hamas what could happen.” Defense Minister Ehud Barak emphasised that the IDF is far from finished with the fight to end the attacks on southern Israel by Palestinian Authority terrorists in Gaza.
HUMANITARIAN AID FLOWS INTO GAZA, MISSILES FLY OUT: by Hana Levi Julian
Even as Palestinian Authority terrorists continue to launch mortar and missile attacks at Israel, Jerusalem has given the go-ahead to open crossings into Gaza so trucks can deliver medical and other supplies to the region. For the second time in three days, truckloads of humanitarian aid made their way from Israel into Gaza through the Sufa Crossing. Officials have noted in the past that much of the “humanitarian aid” sent into to Gaza never reached the residents for whom it was donated. The oil-rich Gulf state of Qatar has been donating millions of dollars per month to help relieve the poverty suffered by Gaza residents - but Hamas operatives have stolen much of it to purchase advanced weaponry.
RED FOR CANCER, GREEN FOR NORMAL: by Gil Ronen
It’s simple. In the new cancer test kit developed by Zetiq Technologies, if the cells in a tissue test stain green, they are normal. If they stain red they are cancerous. Dr. Adi Elkeles, CEO of Zetiq, called the test “a very simple discrimination that can be analyzed even by a layman.” The test can be used to detect a wide range of different cancers, something he claims no other diagnostic tool can do. In addition, it can be used for drug development.
RICE PERSUADES P.A. TO RESUME PEACE TALKS WITHOUT CEASE-FIRE:
Visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday March 5, managed to persuade Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas to drop his demand for a ceasefire before resuming peace talks with Israel, even while the Israeli security cabinet earlier today authorized the IDF to engage in “continuous” operations to quell Hamas rocket fire from Gaza
IRAN SMUGGLING MISSILES TO HIZBULLAH THROUGH TURKEY:
According to Israeli military intelligence, Iran is providing missiles to Hizbullah through Turkey, breaching the UN Security Council’s resolution 1701 that ended the Second Lebanon War. Turkish officials said they were ‘not aware’ of the missile smuggling. Tehran denies the arms smuggling claims, but Israeli Brigadier General Yossi Beiditz of army intelligence told European Union ambassadors last week that Iran continues to ship missiles to Hizbullah
IDF KILLS TOP JIHAD ‘COMMANDER’ IN GAZA OPERATION:
The IDF’s elite Egoz unit entered central Gaza on Tuesday night March 4 and killed a top Islamic Jihad commander before withdrawing by this morning, according to the army spokesman. The special forces surrounded the home of the senior commander of the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Islamic Jihad. The troops, backed by helicopters, exchanged gunfire with Palestinian militiamen.
‘CRAZY ASHKELON MAN BUILDS HOMEMADE ROCKET:
While Palestinian terror militias in Gaza fired another ten rockets at southern Israel on Wednesday March 5, a resident of Ashkelon prepared his own homemade rocket to fire into Gaza in protest of the daily Palestinian rocket barrages at Israel. But he was stopped by police at the last minute from firing the 200-milimeter projectile as a crowd gathered in a town square and cheered him on.
TERRORISTS PLANT MINE, SOLDIER KILLED: IAF KILLS ROCKET TERRORIST by Hillel Fendel
An IDF sapper was killed Thursday morning March 6, while on a routine patrol in the Kisufim area along the Gaza border fence. Islamic Jihad terrorists took credit for having planted a 50-kilogram explosive bomb along the forces’ route. Arabs in Gaza distributed candies in the streets and celebrated the killing of the Israeli soldier Shortly after the soldier was killed, an Islamic Jihad terrorist, carrying a rocket-launcher, was killed in an Israel Air Force raid in northern Gaza Islamic Jihad has also fired some 14 Kassam rockets at Israel’s western Negev over the past two days.
SECURITY CABINET DECIDES: END ALL ROCKET ATTACKS FROM GAZA: by Hana Levi Julian
The Security Cabinet decided in a longer-than-usual meeting Wednesday March 5, to put an end to the rocket and mortar attacks fired by Gaza terrorists at Israel. The resolution adopted by the cabinet included a decision to destroy the Hamas regime in Gaza, while continuing to negotiate a final status agreement with Palestinian Authority Chairman and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas. The resolution included a decision to coordinate with Egypt the efforts to topple Hamas. It is the first time that a formal decision has been taken to completely eradicate missile attacks launched from Gaza. More than 180 rockets have been fired at southern Israel in the past seven days, including at least 20 long-range 122 mm Iranian “Grad” missiles.
EITAM TO ARAB MKs: WE’LL BANISH YOU: by Hillel Fendel
“The day will come when we will banish you from this building and from the national home of the Jewish People,” MK Eitam told Arab MKs during a Knesset session on Wednesday morning March 5. “We must expel you,” Eitam said in the Knesset, directing his remarks specifically to Arab MKs Zakhalka and Taleb A-Sana, “as well as all those who took part in the traitorous and out-of-control event last night. We must expel you to Gaza.” Eitam, an IDF Brig.-Gen. was referring to an anti-Israel protest held in the Israeli-Arab city of Umm El-Fahm last night, at which Israeli-Arab citizens burned an Israeli flag, carried flags of Syria and the Palestinian Authority, and compared IDF soldiers compared to Nazis. Arab MKs who were present incited the crowd against Israel. Mr Eitam continued, “I tell you that the day will come when we will banish you from this building and from the national home of the Jewish People. You well deserve it”.
HIZBULLAH WAITING FOR ISRAEL TO START WAR:
The terror militia’s deputy leader Naim Kassem said on Wednesday Mar 5, that his group is prepared for more war with Israel but will not fire the first shot. He also threatened that Israel would greatly suffer in any upcoming war. “Hizbullah cannot confirm [that there will be war] because it does not want to initiate it… The Israelis know they have to pay a high price in any war,” said Kassem. Likely referring to the US’s stationing of US ships off Lebanon’s coast, Kassem added that Hizbullah is ready to fight an Israeli, American, and worldwide war, reported Haaretz
EVACUATE GAZANS SO IDF CAN ATTACK:
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is looking for a legal way to encourage thousands of Palestinians in the area of Gaza City to move temporarily to southern Gaza so the IDF can carry out a large-scale search for Kassam rockets without harming innocent residents, according to Israel TV Channel 2 on Wednesday March 5.
ARAB GUNMAN MURDERS EIGHT STUDENTS AT JERUSALEM SCHOOL
Steven Erlanger and Isabel Kershner
An Arab gunman entered the prominent Mercaz Harav yeshiva in Jerusalem on Thursday night March 6, killing at least eight students and wounding at least nine others, three of them seriously, the Israeli police said. The gunman killed two people at the entrance and then entered the library, spraying the students with gunfire from a Kalashnikov rifle. Israeli defense officials said the gunman who attacked the school came from eastern Jerusalem, whose Palestinian residents have Israeli ID cards that give them freedom of movement in Israel, unlike Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. The Pal terrorist was gunned down by a part-time yeshiva student, aided by an off-duty army officer from the neighborhood.
