Labor chair to decide over weekend whether to demand replacement
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak has kept mum so far on whether he will keep his promise to pull his Labor party out of the government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in the wake of the final Winograd report, which was published Wednesday February 6. But reports indicated he would make a decision over the weekend and at most will call for Kadima to replace Olmert, rather than leave the government and force new elections.
ISRAELI EMBASSY IN MAURITANIA ATTACKED BY ISLAMISTS:
Six suspected Islamist gunmen screaming “Allah Akbar” opened fire early Friday morning February 1 on the Israeli Embassy in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, located in the western Sahara. The gunmen arrived by car, and gathered close to the embassy before opening fire. Embassy guards then traded fire with the gunmen. Three of them were arrested by February 3.

After Cairo’s persistent requests and Jerusalem’s previous veto, Israel’s Foreign Ministry is finally advising that Israel permit Egypt to double its security forces positioned along the Israeli-Gaza border. The increase would require Israel’s authorization since the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty restricts the number of soldiers that Egypt can station along the border.

Police increased alert levels throughout the country on Monday February 4, following a deadly suicide bombing in Dimona and an escalation in attacks on motorists by Palestinian Authority terrorists. The suicide bomber who blew himself up and killed at least one other person in Dimona Monday morning has been identified as Fatah member Mussa Arafat, a member of the Al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades and a resident of Khan Yunis, in central Gaza. Nine specific warnings of planned terrorist attacks and at least 50 general security alerts have been issued by the General Security Service (GSS) and the IDF since the Dimona suicide bombing.

The message to the West, declared in English in front of media microphones and cameras, glorifies an independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully beside Israel. GAZANS IMPORT DANGERS FROM EGYPT-ISRAEL BLOCKS GAZA EXPORTS:
Israeli officials may ban the export of produce and other items from Gaza in the wake of a massive buying spree in Egypt by Palestinian Authority Arabs. The produce and livestock brought back from Egypt likely contain diseases not widespread in Israel. Roughly 10,000 sheep were brought back to Gaza from the Sinai Peninsula, along with hundreds of cows, thousands of chickens, and tons of various plants and seeds.

EGYPT FINALLY CLOSES GAZA BORDER:
After 11 days of free movement for Palestinians from the Gaza Strip into the Egyptian Sinai, Egypt closed the final hole in the border separating the two territories on Sunday February 3. Egyptians were allowing people to return to their respective homes, but not allowing any new border crossings.
HAMAS FIRES 12 ROCKETS AT SDEROT, IDF KILLS 7 HAMAS TERRORISTS IN GAZA:
Palestinian terrorists in Gaza fired a dozen Kassam rockets into Israel on Tuesday February 5, that heavily damaged a house in Sderot, wounded nine local residents, some critically, and knocked out power to parts of the embattled city. Earlier Tuesday, two Hamas gunmen were killed in clashes with IDF troops along the Israel-Gaza border.
PALESTINIANS BROUGHT ADVANCED ARMS INTO GAZA: (Ha’aretz)
Israel Security Agency chief Yuval Diskin told government ministers on Sunday February 3, that large quantities of advanced weapons were smuggled into Gaza after the border between Egypt and Gaza was breached. Diskin said long-range rockets, anti-tank missiles, anti-aircraft missiles, and materials used for rocket production were some of the arms brought into the territory. Defense Minister Ehud Barak called for the immediate construction of a fence along Israel’s border with Egypt.

Iran launched a rocket on Monday February 4, designed to send its first homemade research satellite into orbit in the next year, state television said, a move likely to add to Western concerns about Tehran’s nuclear plans. The technology used to put satellites into orbit could also be used for launching weapons, analysts said.
